Gilbert Gonzalez — Leading with Purpose

People often make assumptions about attorneys. They imagine someone reserved, methodical, perhaps even a bit predictable. Gilbert Gonzalez understands why — after all, he built his career on the law. But spend even a few minutes talking with the CEO of the San Antonio Board of REALTORS® and another picture quickly emerges. Beneath the legal mind is an entrepreneur at heart, a servant leader by conviction and someone who once stood in the streets of Pamplona, Spain, waiting for a cannon blast that signaled it was time to run alongside charging bulls.

That willingness to embrace challenge has defined nearly every chapter of Gonzalez’s career. “I’ve learned that my greatest motivation is being told I can’t do something,” he says with a laugh. It is a philosophy that has carried him from a White House internship, where he slept on a basement mattress while working to establish himself, to the courtroom as a prosecutor and ultimately to leading one of the nation’s largest REALTOR® associations. Along the way, he has continually sought opportunities not because they were easy, but because they
required growth.

Yet his journey into real estate was anything but planned. As a law student, Gonzalez envisioned a future practicing corporate law. Business fascinated him, and he looked forward to helping companies navigate legal challenges. Then, during his third year of law school, tragedy reshaped everything: his parents were struck by a drunk driver, and his mother lost her life. The experience altered not only his personal life but also the direction of his career.

Instead of pursuing business law immediately, Gonzalez became a prosecutor, dedicating several years to public service before eventually returning to the business world. Looking back, he sees those years as invaluable preparation, not because they led directly to real estate, but because they strengthened his ability to communicate, advocate and lead.

When an opportunity opened to serve as legal counsel for the San Antonio Board of REALTORS®, it seemed like a natural next step. During his interview, he made a point of answering a question no one had asked. “They forgot to ask me why I wanted the job,” he recalls. His answer surprised them: he loved houses. Not simply buying and selling them, but everything they represent: the architecture, the design, the opportunity for families to build stability and the role homeownership plays in strengthening communities. To Gonzalez, real estate has always been about far more than transactions.

“I love everything about the idea of owning your own home,” he says. “It has such an impact on the economy, on families, and on the social fabric of our communities.”

Once immersed in the REALTOR® community, his appreciation only deepened. He found himself surrounded by entrepreneurs willing to build businesses through determination, resilience and hard work. Unlike many industries that require significant capital to get started, real estate offers individuals an opportunity to create something meaningful through persistence and hustle — an entrepreneurial spirit that continues to inspire him today.

After six years as the organization’s attorney, another unexpected opportunity appeared. His CEO announced she was leaving and encouraged Gonzalez to pursue her position. His immediate response? “I don’t think I should.” Leadership had never been part of his long-term career plan; he expected to remain an attorney throughout his professional life. But after accepting the interim role, he discovered something that fundamentally changed his perspective: everyone has ideas about how an organization could improve, yet very few people are given the opportunity to make those ideas reality.

“The awesome thing about becoming the boss is the level of authority you have,” Gonzalez says. “When you’re not the boss, you always think, ‘If I were in charge, here’s what I’d do.’ Then suddenly you are in charge, and you realize the responsibility is yours.” Rather than viewing that responsibility as intimidating, he embraced it.

Today, Gonzalez believes one of his greatest responsibilities is building an organizational culture that reflects the values it promotes. For him, culture cannot exist only in mission statements or posters hanging on office walls — it must be evident in the way people treat one another, support members and work together every day. “My goal is to build a team that is passionate,” he says. “Because that passion gets projected onto our members.” That philosophy has helped shape an organization focused not only on serving REALTORS®, but also on strengthening the broader community.

Under Gonzalez’s leadership, the association continues to support charitable organizations, volunteer initiatives, housing-related programs and research partnerships that help local leaders make informed policy decisions. Whether assisting nonprofits, supporting housing studies or advocating for responsible public policy, he sees the organization’s role extending well beyond real estate. “We leverage our information and our resources for the benefit of the community we serve,” he explains.

His tenure has also marked an important milestone in the organization’s history. As the first Hispanic CEO to lead the century-old association, Gonzalez recognizes the significance of representation while remaining focused on the opportunities it creates for others. “I think being able to create the American dream or at least the American opportunity for the community that gave me so much has been awesome,” he says.

Looking ahead, Gonzalez sees technology reshaping the profession in ways that are both exciting and inevitable. Artificial intelligence, he believes, is not replacing REALTORS® — instead, it is becoming another tool that successful professionals must learn to use effectively. “AI isn’t going to take your job,” he says. “But the person who knows how to use AI probably will.” As consumers expect faster answers and more personalized service, REALTORS® who embrace technology while continuing to deliver trusted guidance will be best positioned to succeed. Gonzalez believes the industry’s future lies in combining innovation with the human relationships that have always been central to real estate.

For someone who describes himself as an introvert, Gonzalez has become remarkably comfortable leading conversations, building partnerships and representing one of the industry’s most respected organizations. He admits that public-facing leadership did not come naturally; running, quiet reflection and time alone remain how he recharges after demanding days.

Still, perhaps the best metaphor for his leadership sits not in his office, but in a photograph on his desk. Years ago, Gonzalez fulfilled a longtime dream by running with the bulls in Pamplona. Before stepping onto the course, he studied every turn, every escape route and every possible risk. When the cannon fired, preparation gave way to action. The race itself lasted only seconds, but the lesson has stayed with him much longer. “If you can run with the bulls,” he says, “you can run with this.”

It is a reminder that courage is rarely the absence of fear. More often, it is the willingness to prepare well, trust yourself and move forward anyway. That mindset has carried Gilbert Gonzalez through personal tragedy, career reinvention and executive leadership — and it continues to shape the way he serves the REALTORS®, communities and future generations who look to the profession as a pathway to opportunity.
